Derived from the Arabic wordyashrabwhich means “to drink”. Why do you call it a "Taste of History"?We use a very traditional recipe from 1832 for the inspiration for all our shrubs. This original recipe written when shrubs were a common beverage, gives a great balance between the fruit & vinegar. This allows us to achieve the perfect balance of sweet, savory, tangy and an almost umami complexity made with 100% real, simple, all-natural ingredients. Why did people make shrubs in the 18th & 19th century? The technique of making Shrubs was used to preserve fresh fruit in the days before modern refrigeration. The vinegar helps to preserve the fruit while adding a bit of a tartness. The result is a concentrated syrup that can be preserved easily & enjoyed at a later time. Drinking shrubs fell out of favor once home refrigeration came along in the late 1800's. Fortunately, shrubs have experienced a revival of late, mostly because they are delicious, but also because they are healthful and restorative to the body. What kind of vinegar do you use, does is have the 'mother' in it? The highest quality ingredients are important, so we use Raw Organic Apple Cider Vinegar with the "mother". Note not all shrubs are made this type of vinegar. What is the shelf life for Taste of History Shrubs and how long will it last once I open it?Our shrubs will keep for up to 24 months unopened and unrefrigerated on the shelf. Once you open them, we do recommend keeping them in the refrigerator. They are good for at least 6 months in the fridge after you open them, but let's hope you enjoy them so much they don't need to sit that long. Does Taste of History Shrub need to be refrigerated Nope, not until you open it. But once opened it should be refrigerated. How much Taste of History Shrub should I use? For refreshing beverages, we recommend mixing 1-2 oz of shrub per 8 oz of water - that could be cold water, hot water, or sparkling water. For Cocktails & Mocktails, we recommend 1/2 - 1 oz per cocktail/mocktail depending on the drink. For other culinary adventures, use shrubs in place of whatever vinegar is called for in your recipes.
